Following the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization around 1400 BC, a new era dawned in ancient India—the Vedic Age, spanning from 1500 BC to 500 BC. Vedic Age period derived its name from the Vedas, a collection of sacred texts composed during this time, providing invaluable insights into the era's social, cultural, and religious practices.

The Vedic Age was characterized by the migration of Indo-Aryans into the Indian subcontinent, bringing with them their unique language, beliefs, and social structures. They settled primarily in the northwestern region, establishing a predominantly pastoral society centered around cattle rearing and agriculture.

The Vedas, the cornerstone of Vedic culture, comprised hymns, rituals, and philosophical treatises, reflecting a deep reverence for nature and a belief in a pantheon of deities. The Vedic people worshiped gods like Indra, Agni, and Surya, performing elaborate sacrifices to appease them and seek their blessings.

Society during the Vedic Age was organized into a hierarchical structure, with the Brahmins, the priestly class, holding the highest status, followed by the Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras (laborers). The caste system, though not as rigid as in later periods, began to take shape during this Vedic Age.

The Vedic Age laid the foundation for Hinduism, one of the world's oldest religions. The Vedas, Upanishads, and other texts from this period continue to influence Hindu beliefs and practices to this day. The Vedic Age marked a significant transition in India's history, shaping its cultural and religious landscape for millennia to come.

<h2 id="content-id-1982-1">Vedic Literature</h2>

The Vedas are the large bodies of religious text that is composed of Vedic Sanskrit and originated in the Vedic Age of ancient India. They form the oldest scriptures of Hinduism and the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature. The Vedas are said to have passed on through verbal transmission from one generation to the next. Therefore, they are also known as Shruti.

The term Vedic literature means the four Vedas in their Samhita and the allied literature based on or derived from the Vedas. We classify the Vedic literature into the following categories: The four Vedas i.e. the Rig, Sama, Yajur and Atharva and their Samhitas. The Brahmanas are attached to each Samhita.

The word ‘Veda’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘vid’, meaning to know, signifying knowledge par excellence. The Vedic text is ‘Shruti’ i.e. directly revealed to authors by God.

Smritis are remembered and collected parts of literature of later periods. They are also called Samhitas in the sense that they represent an oral tradition of the time.

Four Vedas and their Samhitas, the Brahmanas, the Aranyakas and the Upanishads form a class of literature known as 'Shruti'.

<h3>The Rig Veda:</h3>

Rig-Veda is known as the oldest religious text in the world. It is also known as the “First testament” of mankind. It was composed around 1700 BC. Last hymns were composed between 1500-1200 BC. It’s a collection of hymns by a number of priest families. It is organized in 10 books which are called Mandalas.

<h3>The Yajur Veda: </h3>

“Yajus” means “sacrificial formula” and Yajurveda is the book of sacrificial prayers. It contains the rituals of the Yajnas. It is estimated to have been composed between 1,400 and 1000 BC. It prescribes the rituals for performing different sacrifices. It was the manual of the Adhvaryus.

<h3>The Sama Veda: </h3>

"Saman" means melody and it contains the Rhythmic compilation of Hymns of Rigveda. It ranks next in sanctity and liturgical importance to the Rigveda. It contains 1549 hymns which are meant to be sung at the soma sacrifice by a special class of Brahmans called “Udgatris”. It has three shakhas or recensions:

	<li>Kauthuma: Panchvish Brahmana</li>
	<li>The Jaiminiya: Jaiminiya Brahmana</li>
	<li>Ravayaniya: Shadvish Brahmana</li>

<h3>The Atharva Veda:</h3>

Atharva-Veda is entirely different from the other three Vedas and is chronologically the last of the four. It is important and interesting as it describes the popular beliefs and superstitions of the humble folk. Atharvaveda contains the magic spells, incorporates much of early traditions of healing and magic that are paralleled in other Indo-European literatures. This Veda is also known as Brahma Veda.

<h3>The Upvedas:</h3>

These are subsidiary Vedas dealing with secular subjects. Four important upavedas are as follow:

	<li>Ayur Veda Pertain to medicine.</li>
	<li>Dhanur Veda Pertain to the art of warfare.</li>
	<li>Gandharva Veda Pertain to music.</li>
	<li>Shilpa Veda Pertain to art and literature.</li>

Now, let's try understand what are Upnishads, one of the most important topic of Vedic Age.

“Upa” means nearby and “sada” means sit. So, Upanishads contain the knowledge imparted by the gurus to their disciples.

The term Upanishads indicates knowledge acquired by sitting close to the teacher. Under it, many metaphysical topics were discussed, such as the origin of the universe, the nature of God, the origin and death of mankind etc.

	<li>On the contrary, they are the followers of Karma (Action), Atma (Soul) and God (Brahma).</li>
	<li>They are spiritual and philosophical in nature.</li>
	<li>Also known as Vedanta or the end of Vedas.</li>
	<li>They always preach the Jnana marga (knowledge path).</li>
	<li>Upanishads are 108 in number.</li>
	<li>Satyamev Jayate is extracted from Mundaka Upanishad.</li>

<h3>Ramayana:</h3>

From the heart of ancient India, Maharishi Valmiki, India's first poet, penned the Ramayana, an epic saga of 24,000 verses, meticulously structured into seven books (Kandas) and 500 sargas. Initially composed of a modest 8800 verses, the Mahabharata underwent expansions, eventually culminating in a staggering 1,00,000 verses. Puranas are a collection of ancient Hindu texts that narrate a vast array of legends, genealogies, and descriptions of Hindu cosmology, philosophy, and geography. The term "Purana" means "ancient" or "old," reflecting their role as repositories of traditional knowledge. There are 18 major Puranas, each focusing on different deities and themes. While some Puranas may have been compiled during the Gupta period, their origins extend much further back, with some dating as early as the 3rd century BCE of the Vedic Age.

The authorship of Puranas is traditionally attributed to Lomaharshana's son Ugrasravas; however, modern scholarship suggests that they were composed over a long period by multiple authors. Puranas are not a homogenous body of work but rather a diverse collection of narratives and traditions.

Matsya Purana is considered one of the earliest Puranas, but there is no definitive consensus on the exact chronological order of their composition. While Matsya Purana mentions various dynasties, its primary focus is on the legend of Matsya, the fish incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

The Indus Valley Civilization was established around 3300 BC. It flourished around 2500 BC, which is often called the age of matured Indus Valley Civilization. It forms the backbone of India as it is one of the major civilizations of the world. Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) is one of the four great civilisations of the world. It flourished along the flood plains of Indus and Ghaggar-Hakra. Indus Valley Civilization was spread across the western part of South Asia that now lies in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It started declining around 1900 BC and disappeared around 1400 BC.

The Indus Valley Civilization, also known as the Harappan Civilization, was a Bronze Age civilization that flourished in the Indus River Valley of modern-day Pakistan and northwestern India. It was one of the three earliest civilizations of the Old World, along with Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. 

As discussed earlier, the Indus Valley Civilization flourished from approximately 2500 to 1700 BCE, and its major urban centers included Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Lothal, and Dholavira. These cities were well-planned and had advanced sanitation systems, public baths, and granaries. The Indus Valley Civilization also had a sophisticated system of trade and commerce, and its merchants traded with other civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Central Asia.

Mohenjo-daro is an archaeological site in the province of Sindh, Pakistan. It is one of the most important sites of the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished from approximately 2500 to 1700 BCE. "Mohenjo-daro" means "the mound of the dead". It was a large and well-planned city, with a population of up to 35,000 people. The city was built on a grid system of streets and had a number of public buildings, including granaries, baths, and a citadel. The unearthings started at this location in 1922, with R.D. Banerjee and Sir John Marshall taking up the work.

Mohenjo-daro is known for its advanced sanitation system. The city had a network of drains that carried waste water out of the city. This system was much more advanced than any other sanitation system in the world at the time. It was also a center of trade and commerce. The city was located on a major trade route between Mesopotamia and Central Asia. Mohenjo-daro merchants traded a variety of goods, including pottery, jewelry, and textiles.

Mohenjo-daro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is open to the public and is a popular tourist destination.

<h3>Some of the most famous features of Mohenjo-daro include:</h3>

	<li>The Great Bath: A large, public bath that was built around 2500 BCE. The bath was made of brick and lined with bitumen.</li>
	<li>The Citadel: A fortified area that was located at the center of the city. The Citadel contained a number of public buildings, including a granary, a palace, and a temple.</li>
	<li>The Granary: A large building that was used to store grain. The granary was made of brick and had a capacity of up to 100,000 tons of grain.</li>
	<li>The Lower City: The residential area of Mohenjo-daro. The Lower City was home to the majority of the city's population.</li>

Harappa, a pivotal city of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, is located in what is now modern-day Pakistan. Flourishing between approximately 2500 and 1700 BCE, Harappa represents one of the most significant archaeological sites from this era. The city was meticulously planned and is believed to have housed up to 35,000 inhabitants. Its well-organized grid layout, advanced drainage system, and public structures, including granaries and baths, showcase the engineering and organizational skills of its time.

Harappa was the first location to be unearthed and archaeologists like Dayaram Sahni, M.S. Vats and Mortimer Wheeler carried out unearthing at Harappa. It lay on the bank of the Ravi river in the Punjab region.

The name "Kalibangan" means "black bangles", derived from the discovery of a large number of black bangles at the site. This ancient city was a significant urban center and is known for its fire-altars and unique terracotta ploughshares, providing insights into agricultural practices of the time.

Kalibangan also revealed a well-planned town layout with a fortified settlement and a well-organized drainage system. The site's excavation has contributed to our understanding of the Indus Valley Civilization, offering glimpses into their culture, technology, and everyday life. Kalibangan was unearthed within the 1960s beneath the direction of B.K. Thapar. This yielded proof for the presence of Pre-Harappan and Harappan homes.

Lothal is located between the Bhogavo and Sabarmati rivers near the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat. The word "Lothal" literally means "The mound of dead" similar to Mohenjo-daro. The city was discovered by SN Rao in 1957. The city was mathematically planned and it had a grid pattern with streets crossing at right angles.

The city's well-structured layout showcases paved streets, a dockyard, and a complex drainage system, revealing the engineering prowess of its time. Lothal was strategically positioned near the Gulf of Khambhat, facilitating trade not only with other regions of the Indian subcontinent but also with Mesopotamia and Egypt.

The discovery of seals, pottery, and other artifacts has shed light on the Indus Valley Civilization's writing system and trade networks. Furthermore, Lothal's dockyard, one of the world's earliest, underlines its maritime activities.

Chanhudaro is an ancient archaeological site located in the Sindh province of Pakistan, belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization. Dating back to around 2600 BCE, it is one of the lesser-known but significant sites from this ancient civilization. Chanhudaro is known for its well-planned urban layout with streets and drainage systems, indicative of the civilization's advanced urban development. It was discovered by NG Majumdar in 1931.

Archaeological excavations at Chanhudaro have unearthed artifacts such as pottery, seals, beads, and terracotta figurines, shedding light on the culture, trade, and craftmanship of the people who inhabited the site. The presence of seals with Indus script adds to the mystery of the civilization's writing system, which remains undeciphered.

Chanhudaro's historical importance lies in its contribution to the broader understanding of the Indus Valley Civilization, highlighting its urbanization, craftsmanship, and trade networks, despite being relatively less recognized than other major Indus Valley sites like Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro.

Dholavira is a remarkable archaeological site located in the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, India, and is a testament to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. It dates back to around 2500-1500 BCE, making it one of the most recently discovered and well-preserved sites of this civilization. The site was discovered in 1967-68 by JP Joshi and is the fifth largest of the eight Harappan Majors sites.

The city of Dholavira is renowned for its sophisticated urban planning and engineering. It features a unique water management system with well-constructed reservoirs, channels, and step wells, reflecting the civilization's ability to manage water resources in a desert environment. The site's fortified citadel and lower town reveal insights into the societal organization and governance of the time. 

Dholavira's excavation has yielded a treasure trove of artifacts, including seals, pottery, and a signboard with the longest known example of the Indus script. These findings have significantly contributed to our understanding of the culture, trade networks, and script of the Indus Valley Civilization.

Notably, a significant defection occurred within this camp, as 15,000 cavalry under the command of Mir Jafar switched sides. Kalasoka, also known as Kakavarna, was the son of Shishunaga and a prominent ruler of the Shishunaga dynasty. Kalasoka's reign was marked by a significant shift in Magadha's political landscape. This move facilitated trade and communication, further propelling Magadha's economic growth and cultural vibrancy.

In addition to his administrative prowess, Kalasoka demonstrated a keen interest in religious affairs. He played a pivotal role in convening the Second Buddhist Council in Vaishali, an event that played a crucial role in preserving and disseminating the Buddha's teachings.

Unfortunately, Kalasoka's reign was tragically cut short by a palace uprising that led to his demise and the installation of the Nanda dynasty. Two rulers of Sisunaga dynasty Nandivardhana (367 BCE – 355 BCE) and Mahanandin (355 BCE – 345 BCE) ruled for almost 20 more years but then they eventually surrendered to the Nanda Dynasty. Despite his untimely end, Kalasoka's legacy is firmly rooted in his contributions to Magadha's political, economic, and religious spheres, cementing his place as a transformative figure in ancient Indian history.

Mahapadma Nanda's reign, spanning from 367 BC to 338 BC, was characterized by military expansion and administrative reforms. He successfully extended Magadha's dominion, earning him the title "Ekrat," meaning "sole sovereign." Additionally, he earned the moniker "SarvaKashtriyantaka," which translates to "destroyer of all Kshatriyas," hinting at his ruthless suppression of rival kingdoms.

Despite his achievements, Mahapadma Nanda's origins remain shrouded in uncertainty. While the Puranas depict him as a low-born Shishunaga ruler, Jain and Greek accounts suggest a more humble background, describing him as the son of a barber and a harlot.

Mahapadma Nanda's reign marked a turning point in Indian history, signaling the end of the Shishunaga dynasty and ushering in the Nanda dynasty. His legacy remains a subject of debate, with some hailing him as a powerful emperor and others condemning his ruthlessness. In 326 BC, Dhana Nanda's rule was challenged by Alexander the Great's invasion of northwest India. Despite facing stiff resistance from Dhana Nanda's army, Alexander's forces gradually gained ground. However, Alexander's ambitions were limited by his army's fatigue and the prospect of crossing the formidable Ganges River into the Nanda heartland.

In a crucial decision, Alexander ordered a retreat, marking the end of his eastward expansion. Dhana Nanda's kingdom remained intact, but his reputation was tarnished by the invasion. The most immediate and unexpected by-product of Alexander’s invasion of North-West was that it hastened the Mauryan conquest of the whole country. Chandragupta, with the help of an intelligent and politically astute Brahmin, Kautilya usurped the throne by defeating Dhana Nanda in 321 BC.

Chandragupta Maurya, born in 340 BCE, was the founder and first emperor of the Mauryan Empire, one of the largest empires in history. He ruled from 321 to 297 BCE and unified most of the Indian subcontinent under a single administration.

In 305 BC, he entered into a treaty with Seleucus Nicator in which Chandragupta acquired Balochistan, eastern Afghanistan and the region to the west of Indus. He also married Seleucus Nicator’s daughter. In return, Seleucus Nicator got 500 elephants. Seleucus Nicator avoided a full- scale war with the mighty Chandragupta and in return got war assets that would lead him to victory against his rivals in the Battle of Ipsus, fought in 301 BC. In 305 BC Chandragupta defeated Seleucus Nicator (the Greek ambassador), who surrendered a big territorial part to him including Kabul, Afghanýstan, Balochistan and Heraat also received a Greek ambassador i.e. Megasthenese (wrote Indica having the description of Mauryan administration, society etc.)

Ashoka the Great, also known as Ashoka Maurya, was the third emperor of the Mauryan Empire, which ruled over much of the Indian subcontinent from 273 BCE to 232 BCE. He is considered one of the greatest emperors in Indian history, and his reign is marked by a remarkable transformation from a ruthless warrior to a devoted follower of Dharma (righteousness).

<h2 id="content-id-1702366060837-3">Ashoka’s Edicts</h2>

James Prinsep, a British antiquary and colonial administrator was the first person to decipher Ashoka’s edicts. These Ashoka’s inscriptions are the first tangible evidence of Buddhism. Ashokan edicts are inscribed either on pillars of stone or on rocks. They consist of major and minor groups. They give information on the lite and reign of the King.

There are 33 inscriptions in total and primarily classified into the following:

	<li>Separate rock edicts</li>
	<li>Major pillar edicts</li>
	<li>Minor pillar edicts</li>
</ol>

In the earlier half of his reign, the edicts were inscribed on conveniently located rock surfaces and were distributed in the areas of public settlement, where people could easily read them and are referred to as major and minor rock edicts. The inscriptions were composed in the Prakrit language (in Magadhi, the dialect of Prakrit in Magadha) and written in Brahmi script throughout the greater part of the empire. But in the north-western part, they appear in Kharosthi script and in Kandahar in Afghanistan, they were written in Aramaic, in Greek script and Greek language.

			This edict was also written in Greek (probably together with all the other Major Rock Edicts I-XIV originally) in the Kandahar Greek Edict of Ashoka (first portion recovered).

<h3>Minor Rock Edicts:</h3>

Minor rock edicts are found on 15 rocks across the country and in Afghanistan also. These are spread over 13 places i.e. Bairat, Brahmagiri,Gavimath, Gujarra, Jatinga-Rameshwar, Maski, Palkigunda, Maadigiri, Rupanath, Sasaram, Siddhapur, Suvarnagiri and Yerragudi. Bhabru Inscriptions is located at Bairat in Rajasthan and deals with Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism. Two types of stones are used: spotted white sandstone (from Mathura) and buff coloured sandstone and quartzite (from Amaravati). Generally, they are made of sandstone quarried from Chunar. They have almost similar form and dimensions.

<h3>Major Pillar Edicts:</h3>

These are a set of 7 edicts found at Allahabad, Meerut, Sopara, Lauriya Areraj, Lauriya Nandangarh and Rampurva. These edicts are engraved on Monolithic pillars. Kausambi edicts are known as Queen’s Edicts. They indicate donations given by queen Karuvaki.

<h3>Minor Pillar Edicts:</h3>

<ol>
	<li>Rummindei Pillar Inscription: It mentions the exemption of Lumbini (birth place of Buddha) from tax.</li>
	<li>Nigalisagar Pillar Inscription: It is located in Kapilvastu. It informs about Ashoka increasing the size of the stupa of Buddha Konagamana to double of its former size.</li>
	<li>Schism Edict: It is located at Kaushambi, Sanchi and Sarnath. It appeals to maintaining unity in Buddhist order.</li>
	<li>Barbara Cave Inscriptions: It is located in Bihar. They speak about Ashoka’s donation of a cave to the Ajivikas.</li>
</ol>

The Mauryan period is considered a remarkable period in the early history of the Indian subcontinent. The Mauryas ruled over the whole of the subcontinent except Kerala, Tamil Nadu and some parts of northeastern India.

According to Buddhist tradition, Ashoka ruled for 27 years. The disintegration of the Mauryan empire seemed to have set in immediately after Ashoka’s death. The tenth and the last of the Mauryas was Brihadratha, who was murdered by his General Pushyamitra Shunga. This was the end of the Mauryan dynasty.
